Mark Forbush, Michigan’s state supervisor for agriculture, food and natural resources education and Michigan FFA advisor, was recently recognized by the National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education (NASAE) as the 2026 NASAE Outstanding State Supervisor. NASAE formally presented the award to Forbush on Oct. 20 during its annual awards banquet at the National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis.Mark Forbush with NASAE award

Forbush is the first Michigander ever to receive the national honor, which recognizes a state supervisor who has made exceptional contributions to agricultural education leadership, strengthened educator support systems and advanced high‑quality AFNR programs nationwide.

Forbush has served Michigan agricultural education for 40 years, including three decades as an agriscience educator and FFA advisor before transitioning to statewide leadership through the Michigan Department of Education and Michigan State University. His career is widely regarded as a model of student‑centered leadership, educator support and long‑term commitment to strengthening the profession.

“One phrase guides his work and is familiar to anyone who works alongside him: ‘What is best for students?’” said Dr. Tiffany Rogers‑Randolph, Michigan FFA state executive secretary. “Mark does not simply make decisions prioritizing students; he empowers students to participate in the decisions that affect them.”

Under Forbush’s leadership, Michigan agricultural education has experienced significant growth. Since 2016, the state’s AFNR programs have increased from 117 to 138, and the number of agriscience teachers has grown from 123 to 169. His work has strengthened recruitment pipelines, professional development systems and statewide structures that support educators at every stage of their careers.

Dr. Aaron McKim, associate professor and program lead for agricultural education at Michigan State University, said Forbush’s classroom experience is central to his impact. “Mark brings expertise developed during his 30 years of teaching agriculture in Michigan. His advice stems from — and holds up to — the realities of being an agricultural educator.” McKim noted Forbush’s commitment to preservice and early‑career teachers, often driving across the state before dawn to observe student teachers and support new educators.

Forbush also played a key role in implementing Michigan’s historic $4 million state investment in agricultural education during the 2023–24 school year. He helped design and execute the statewide grant distribution process, ensuring 83 programs and FFA chapters could access funding for facilities, technology, curriculum and hands‑on learning resources.

Kevin Nugent, contest and recognition coordinator for Michigan FFA, emphasized Forbush’s long‑standing influence. “Throughout his career, Mark has never wavered in his mission to strengthen agricultural education and put students first.”

In addition to his statewide leadership, Forbush has been deeply involved in professional organizations, including the Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators and NASAE, where he has served on awards, nominations and professional development committees. His advocacy has included testimony before Michigan legislative committees and national engagement, including presenting at the National FFA Convention to the U.S. Secretary of Education.

“For 40 years, Mark has strengthened agricultural education and the people who make it possible,” Alex Schnabelrauch, Michigan FFA Foundation executive secretary, said. “His recognition as the 2026 NASAE Outstanding State Supervisor is a reflection of his unwavering commitment to students, educators and programs across the state. Our teachers are better and our students have more opportunities to grow and succeed thanks to Mark’s tireless commitment and passion.”
